STEVENAGE U18'S 2 BOREHAM WOOD U18'S 1

Stevenage Borough Youth won a deserved victory on Monday Night as they defeated Boreham Wood by the single goal.

Despite the close score, it does not paint the real picture of the game as Stevenage could have scored a hatful.

Playing the tie this week, after the match was postponed last week, meant that another league game had to make way for this fixture to be played. It was not without it's own controversy as early as the fifth minute but Borough fought hard and had the upper hand for the majority of the match.

The aforementioned controversy came when Stevenage waltzed into the box with the ball at their feet only to be taken down. The referee awarded a penalty and Alwayne Powell stepped up to take the spot kick. Before the young striker could even make his run up the referee decided to consult with his linesman and awarded a free kick for offside instead.

Borough did not allow it to affect them though as they went on to score shortly almost immediately after when Paulo Marenghi scored a marvellous goal to put Stevenage ahead.

Before the half was finished Borough had a two goal lead when Pat Ulor, who played reserve football last year for Borough, managed to put the ball in the back of the net.

After half time the game was there for the taking and Borough could easily have gone on to score many more goals, but were unable to take advantage of their chances. Boreham Wood did well to nick a goal towards the end of the game, but the result was never in doubt.

Jack Cornhill will be pleased with his performance as he bossed the midfield, with good games also from the goal scorers and the Under 16 goalkeeper Jake Knight. The best performance seemd to come though from another young man, Matt Evans who was tireless down the wing. With a good crossing ability and a high workrate, closing down every ball, he did much to enhance his reputation.

All in all it was a performance that was summed up well by manager Pete Edwards who said; "We were awesome on the night." It is hard to disagree.
